LEGO Harry Potter Gryffindor House Banner (76409) Review

Jun 08, 2023

In our first review of the 2023 LEGO Harry Potter wave, we check out the Gryffindor House Banner (76409). It has 285 pieces and retails for $34.99. One thing new about these sets are the lenticular sheets that show various things.

There are three minifigures in this set, Harry Potter, Angelina Johnson, and Neville Longbottom. Yet again, we get another Harry variant. This time, he’s in his school uniform with the jacket open showing his inside shirt. His double-sided head shows him with a smile on one side and a mad expression on the other.

Angelina Johnson is a new character for the theme. She has on the red and gold Gryffindor sweater with tan legs. Her double-sided head shows smiles on both sides.

Neville Longbottom is also a new variant. His outfit shows him with the black robes showing some of the inside uniform. His double-sided head shows him with smile on one side and a confused expression on the other.

The builds are very straight-forward. There’s a center frame that everything goes on which shows the Gryffindor common room. There’s a fireplace on the left and an entrance on the right. There’s also spots for some various artifacts like the Sword of Gryffindor, the golden snitch, and a broom.

The sides of the frame are some hinged areas with even more details. The left side has a window showing a silhouette of a Hogwarts tower. There’s also a little couch here as well.

The right flap has a small study area with a desk and a portrait above it.

Separate from the main build are some couches and a chessboard. The couches attach to the lower flaps for storage and the chessboard goes into the fireplace.

When you close the flaps, you get the Gryffindor banner with a printed centerpiece. In addition, you can hang up the banner using the provided hanging piece in the back.

One of the main selling points and perhaps why the set is a little more expensive is the lenticular sheet that goes in the back. It doesn’t attach to anything but just simply slides in. Here we see a lot of little details in the background such as the moving portrait, the staircase, Buckbeak flying in the air, and the fireplace where you see the face of Sirius Black.

The LEGO Harry Potter Gryffindor House Banner (76409) is a nice concept that is similar to the Hogwarts Moment sets where you have a central base and there are small builds to add detail around it. For this set, technically you get three exclusive minifigures with one brand new character. The builds are simple and just okay, however, the main feature here is the lenticular screen to enhance the details but also factors into the higher price point of $34.99. Another thing that I didn’t really like is how fragile it was, especially at the flaps. If you’re not holding carefully, the lower flap likes to pop off.

Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set for me to review. The content above represents my own opinion and not the company. Review sets sent in does not guarantee a positive review.
